Hey Adventurers! Check out what we saw on our trip to Cahuita National Park over this past Memorial Day Weekend.
We were pretty excited to have Monda off of work, so we celebrated by heading to the recently-opened Cahuita National Park today with our neighbors. Unfortunately, only half the park was open, but it was still well worth the trip.
It was a short 20 minute bus ride there and in a one hour hike in we saw Howler monkeys, giant tree iguana, a sleeping sloth, boat-billed Herons, other birds hunting squid, and a couple white-faced Capuchin monkeys. The animals were out today! Plus, you can't beat the white sands and clear blue waters of Playa Blanca, even if we weren't allowed to go for a swim.
That night we got together at the BBQ for a night of food, drink, and poker. Life in Talamanca continues to normalize after over two months of lockdown and we could not be happier!

BIG NEWS! They opened the beaches... from 5AM to 8AM.
Yes, you read that right, that is not a typo. I mean... really? Well, we will work with what we can!
So, us and a couple neighbors got up at 4:45am today and headed to Cocles Point where we could get pictures of Cocles Island as the sun rose. It was beautiful! Immediately thereafter our neighbors went for a surfing lesson and we hit the Secret Pools Beach, as we call it.
It is an unmarked beach area at the end of a trail where coral stops the surf and you end up with these pools scattered around where you can just float. We set up our blanket, played music, listened to the ocean and floated.
Just before the strike of 8AM and beach closing, we packed up and headed into town for breakfast at Cafe Rio, which is one of our favorite breakfast joints in town.I had the Ana Rosa Special, which is fried potatoes, a fried egg, cheddar cheese, bacon, avocado, beets, a deep fried banana, and hot sauce all in a big bowl. SO DELICIOUS. Brandon went traditional with French toast, eggs and bacon and of course it was great.

This was the most normal day we have had in two months! It is so comical that the beaches are opened for three hours in the morning, but that just means we are about to become morning people. We were still able to start work at 9AM and had a ton of energy for the day! Life is slowly coming alive again in Costa Rica, thank goodness!

Good Evening Adventurers! We wanted to hop in real quick with an update. This weekend we inched a little closer to a sense of normalcy. After lunch out on the town our landlords invited us and the neighbors for a night of paella and salad out at the BBQ. They are from Madrid and their paella was delicious.- After getting up early, we headed out with our neighbors on another jungle hike to a waterfall with a couple swimming holes. Along the way a dog came out of nowhere and hiked the trail with us. We saw more poisonous frogs and a very cool hawk. Lots of wildlife out there. -

On the way in we stopped in town and caught the local fisherman bringing in their haul for the day. One of them had a giant mackerel. Before heading back we stopped off the road and I took a quick pic of Playa Negra, empty as can be. I love the black sand beach.- They've opened up the gym, bars, restaurants, and next week they open up the beach in the mornings and national parks to half capacity. Certainly the town is still a ghost town, but things are slowly coming alive. We hope all of you are safe and well! #PURAVIDA-

WOW! We were on our bikes heading to the store ton

WOW! We were on our bikes heading to the store tonight and as we rounded the corner in the darkness *BAM* a SLOTH in our bike light! -

It was RIGHT THERE crawling along a low power line. It literally startled me and nearly sent me crashing on a pitch black jungle dirt road.- We slammed on the brakes and while Brandon briefly shined the bike light again to double check what we were looking at I grabbed this picture, then we headed on our way. It was gone by the time we came back down the road 20 minutes later. -

And this on a routine night ride to the store. This is jungle living!!! WOW! We will never get used to this. -

Another day, another walk in the neighborhood. This time, we heard a racket outside, stepped out to look and there were Green Macaws and Toucans having a bird party in the trees. Of course we immediately grabbed the camera and spent a good 20 minutes walking around the jungle spotting wildlife. -

We also managed to see a rodent/guinea pig/rabbit type-thingy called an agputi. They are super skittish and live in the jungle. I am glad this one chilled long enough for me to get pictures. There is so much life in the jungle -

After six weeks of isolating with our neighbors, we decided to head into town and there was a decent number of people on the streets. With still no virus cases here after six weeks of lockdown and the restaurants open, we decided to get dinner and a drink on the beach! -

Although we had to disinfect our hands on the way in and the restaurant only had half the tables to keep people spaced apart, the Caribbean Sea was unchanged and beautiful and it was nice to get out. It provided a sense of semi-normalcy. -

Costa Rica has seen a drop in active cases for eight straight days and only added one new case yesterday. I see things are marginally getting better in the US too. Let's hope this continues!! -
